I went to Chili Works for breakfast after hearing about a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with great burritos. It truly is as hole-in-the-wall as it gets, with a 10x10 foot kitchen/ordering area and a small patio with tables for eating - not to mention the intimidating biker dudes that run it. Personally, I've never cared about fancy decor so this wasn't an issue, but if you're looking for a fine dining experience this isn't the place to go. I ordered a "Dr. Ruth" (sausage, Christmas chili, and cheese), which came out to $6 even including tax. Amazingly, I was handed my burrito even before I finished paying. The burritos is absolutely stuffed, with eggs, hash browns, sausage, and chile overflowing out the top, so you definitely get your money's worth. From the first bite to the last, the taste was phenomenal. In my 2 months here in New Mexico, this was the best tasting chili I've had so far. If I had to nitpick the burrito was slightly heavy on the potatoes, but realistically it didn't make the burrito any less delicious. As soon as I finished it, I went back and got another for lunch. The burritos here are amazing, get them.

I am glad all the out of towners love it so much! A breakfast burrito here is a food ball. That is because it is mostly potatoes. There is very little egg or meat and the chile is not hot (well, maybe for an out of towner). The service is fast and furious and you had better have your mind made up before you get to the register because it won't get any easier. But the selection is good and the prices are reasonable. Keep in mind that there are better places in town to get a burrito.

This is one of those places that you would often drive by and wonder about. Stop here. Tu-Sat breakfast burritos and lunch. Fun ordering system and very fast service. A local institution.

    Great prices, tastes good.

Anyone who has spent significant time in Los Alamos knows that Chili Works has some of the best breakfast burritos anywhere. The place is very small with limited seating outside but there is a beautiful park across the street so we usually eat our food on a picnic table there next to the pond. I don't know what they are calling it these days, but my favorite is what they used to call the "Super Red" which has all the different meat options and red chili. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the size of the burritos has shrunk over the years and occasionally you'll get a burrito with way too much potatoes. Despite those things, they still have some amazing food!

Chili Works has the best burittos in town! Their red chile is great, flavourful without being too hot or too mild. We'll be returning.

Justifiably legendary breakfast burritos. Red Chile is amazing. Try the Combination Burrito plate for lunch.

The food is over rated. The guy, cashier, if you see him every day, you know he is simply a moron. No smile on hie face. Sometime, he does not look at me when he talk to me. One time, he spew out some stupid remark and try to make fun of me. I tell him that is not funny, and I don't appreciate that. He said"take your business elsewhere" I have told my friend, my colleagues and my students do not buy burrito in that place. I just can't believe Chili works has such an arrogant and rude employee. He has given Chili Works a bad name.

Brick Sour is my weakness- though for many it's the super x-mas. I feel writing a review of this place is somehow a cardinal sin for even speaking about it to the "outsiders." This place is a secret treasure, hidden high up in a once secret city of Los Alamos. Mock me all you want- just don't mock these seriously blessed burritos. O and when you go- bring cash.

  • Idan S.

First off let me begin by saying this place has the best breakfast burritos I've ever had (one of the best things I've ever eaten)! I'm obsessed with their breakfast burritos and when anyone goes to Los Alamos I usually bug them to bring me back one. Here is what I order: bacon/chorizo/xmas/cheese/sour cream, and I always make sure to get plenty of their habanero salsa on the side! I'm literally drooling over my keyboard as I'm writing this review!

This is hands down the best place to get breakfast burritos. I've lived in Los Alamos for several summers and this place has never disappointed me!

Two words. SUPER CHRISTMAS. I'm an adopted New Mexican, not born and bred. Last week was my first trip to Chili Works! After hearing about it for just about the entire 3 years of dating my man candy, I finally had to have it. I knew it was going to be good. But New Mexican chili is weird to me, as it is to most outsiders. It's kind of bitter, and doesn't have much in it other than peppers. But the Super Christmas burrito came THIS close to blowing my mind. The best part was the red chili mixed with the 1/2 inch ham tube that ran the length of my burrito. Every burrito should contain at least 1 mandatory ham tube. There was also machaca spread on the tortilla, bacon (thick n yummy), some kind of mushy potatoes, some cheddar, and a miniscule amount of eggs. Make sure when you eat this puppy to keep the tinfoil on it and peel back as you go, lest you have a lapful of Christmas. You heard it here first. Chili works... what could you do differently? Fry your potatoes to crisp em up. Also, some extra eggs'd be nice. Nice gut brick you guys got there.

Green or Red can't go wrong! Don't be turns off by this little shack or "Oso's" charm.

  • Grey W.

This may be just a small place in a shack on an old used car lot serving greasy Mexican food. But it is one of the best New Mexican places around. The breakfast burritos are the specialty. Some silly Santa Fe places use potatoes instead of hash browns. Not here! Everything here is simple and delicious. This place is what it is, but it is absolutely one of the best options around. One note for newcomers: Don't give overly complicated orders, especially at breakfast. There are signs on the wall instructing you how to order, and it is very simple. The guy who runs the place and is usually at the cash register is beyond nice, but he can get flustered when people order a burrito like they are ordering their non-fat milk, 107.26 degree caramel frapiatto with a dash of cinammon at Starbucks. Pretend you are in the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld and you will be just fine. You will be glad you did in the end. Oh yeah, the service is super fast. If you come here often enough, you might get your burrito before you can put your change in your pocket, along with a sarcastic "sorry for the wait!" from the staff. Compared to many places in Los Alamos, Chili Works is quick and has excellent service.

It is good to see that the Chili Works is still kickin'. This place got me through the years I spent living on-and-off in Los Alamos. I went back last week, ordered the usual (sausage green) and was instantly transported back in time. The chili isn't the hottest in the state but it is good and consistent. The tortillas and potatoes blend well with the chili to produce total satisfaction. Go ahead - look it up.

  • George D.

Their breakfast burritos are the best. Top 10 by the travel channel. Green and red chili homemade and fresh. Super christmas for 5.90 really good.

    (5)
  • Mark N.

Pretty good New Mexican style burritos.. The "service" is amazingly fast. Sometimes the burrito is already out by the time you finish paying. The place is a little shack with a patio. If the weather is nice, you can sit outside and listen to Los Alamos National Laboratory employees discuss nuclear weapons related secrets. If not, take your food to go.

  • Alijohn G.

Without a doubt the fastest burritos in town; order and you'll have your burrito faster than anything imaginable. Spent an entire week savoring all the local burrito stops and i'd say Chili works ranks second in the entire area. Had they had larger tortillas and more steak with slightly less potatoes they would be perfect.

I used to eat these breakfast burritos every morning before I had a penalty MI at 44 for overindulgence. Now I am more careful about what I eat and only enjoy these coronaries in a tortilla about 3 or 4 times a year. They are the best but make sure you double up on your Lipitor

  • Chuck M.

If you roll through town you should try this place. It is a tiny shack that serves good breakfast burritos and a really fantastic Chicken Enchilada (get green Chile on that) to go. Folks go on an on about the burritos and you should judge that for yourself however if you never try their chicken enchilada you are missing something even better.... I like their Bacon-Green and the Chorizo-Red.

  • Patrick K.

Chili works serves OK breakfast burritos. Most of the burrito is overcooked hash browns, which now resemble mashed potatoes. There are a few overcooked eggs and a small portion of meat. The chile is usually pretty hot, which is nice. The service is SUPER QUICK and they open early. The food comes from SYSCO and the Chile is the frozen Bueno variety ( the same in supermarkets). It ain't bad though. It will make a turd, that is for sure!

    (3)
  • Ryan M.

Simply the best breakfast burritos you can find. The stuffed sopapilla is also awesome. The breakfast burritos are better earlier in the day. You've got to like hot chili.

    (5)
  • Paul F.

If you want an extra spicy yet bland wad of meat and potatoes, then their super breakfast burrito may be for you. Otherwise, there are significantly better breakfast burritos in town (across the street, in fact), and vastly better such fare in NM at large. Their is chili hot, yes, but the breakfast burritos are overloaded with 'mashed potatoes'. They use standard sausage patties for their burrito sausage, which is both typical and not very tasty. I've had they're enchiladas from the lunch menu. They were hot, but otherwise not very special.

Skip it. Here's how they do it. 1 teaspoon egg 1/2 slice crumbled bacon 1 1/2 cup potato mash 1 tablespoon red or green chili Wrap in a flour tortilla Overcharge Serve lukewarm

Perfection, thy name is breakfast burrito. Nothing satisfies the agony of a Chili Works craving like a "Super Christmas" (Try to imagine what keeps the good people at the American Heart Association awake at night and you'll invariably have visualized the super breakfast burrito: scrambled eggs, hash-browns, chorizo, bacon, sausage, and ham wrapped in a flour tortilla, all topped with generous amounts of red and green chile and cheddar cheese). Is the chile hot? Yes, hot and flavorful, that's the point. Is the service brusque in an all-business sort of way? Yes, but this keeps the line moving and gets me to my burrito faster. -see Danny Q's review for tips on how to order-

  • Danny Q.

While the employees look like they've been flogged just a little too hard, and the owner prides himself on fast ordering and turnaround time, the breakfast burritos are the best in town. Like everything in Los Alamos the food is overpriced. Unlike everything in Los Alamos it actually is prepared in a reasonable amount of time and is reasonably good. Many people have likened this place to the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. Here's how to order and avoid scorn: Say the meat you want: Sausage, ham, bacon Say the color of chile you want: Green or Red Say whether or not you want cheese. "Sausage-green-cheese" There are menus posted all around the place so if there's a long line have your order ready. Say it fast and clearly. It's worth the robotic ordering system.

  • Heather J.

The Harley dudes behind the counter will school you on your fare so make sure you know that they do not use sauce...it is chili, red or green. A surprising gem of a food shed (?) by the Sonic and one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had this far north. A word to the wise, the same man behind the counter informed there was no such thing as too hot!

    (4)
  • Michael B.

At least it has character. Chili can be very hot. No indoor seating (literally a little shack) and the outdoor furniture is lousy. However if the weather is nice you can overlook all of that.

    (3)
  • Ziggy S.

Not bad. My coworkers and I enjoyed the Super breakfast burrito with green chili. Different kinds of meat inside... they pretty much throw in every part of the pig. Be warned, it can be a little spicy. And the location doesn't look like much (basically a shed).

  • Mountain M.

I'm a local and have been a fan of Chili Works (in the past) but not anymore. My 'classic' with green is mostly mushy potatoes with gelid green chili (yeah it's good n' spicy). Where are the eggs, cheese and bacon!? At almost $5.00 per burrito I expect more than potato mush and spicy green chili. Oh...and the manager, we call him the Burrito Nazi.

I miss this place every day! Nothing compares to the bacon, red, cheese breakfast burritos from Chili Works :)

So, I went here because I was told it would rock my face off. I got the carne adovado, a special, with red chile sauce. It came to less than $5, and after eating it at 8:30 AM, that and an apple kept me full until dinner. It was spicy, but pleasantly so. I guess one man's pain is another woman's pleasure. :) I didn't get some of the other reviewers' gripes, like an overwhelming amount of potato. I got some potato, yes, and a buttload of meat and eggs, a gargantuan amount of sauce (which I LOVED - seriously, I eat mustard off a spoon sometimes, that's how much I love condiments), and a conservative sprinkle of cheese - also, total perfection. Maybe I caught them on a good day early enough so they didn't have to fill things out with potato? Maybe I love heat, spice, and flavor more than average? Or maybe my east coast taste buds aren't developed enough. Whatever. My face was indeed rocked off. Carne adovado breakfast burrito, Iloveyousomuch, and I would kiss you. With tongue. If I wasn't eating you.

A trendy hole in the wall that is either loved or hated. When it comes to chili and breakfast burritos, generally, there are two kinds of people - those that like heat, and those that like flavor. If you like your chili hot, and I mean REALLY hot, then you will love this place - if you would prefer to taste your food (as opposed to endure it) you will not like this place ...

    (1)
  • Lauren H.

Spicy in, spicy out. The best strategy for eating their burritos is to eat the whole thing without drinking anything. Once you're done, feel free to spread the burn with your favourite beverage. Super Christmas!

  • Royceleen H.

Yummy breakfast burrito (w/ tons of green chili please!) and huevos rancheros :-D. You have to pay attention to their hours though. I suggest memorizing their open hours, otherwise you'll wonder why they're closed every time you go. Their menu is a mouthful of acronyms; I hope you know your New Mexican cuisine lingo!

A hidden find for the city of Los Alamos. A small shack located behind the fast food chain, Sonic. I had their steak burrito, filled with large chunks of steak, eggs, green chilies, hash browns, and an exorbitant amount of cheese. Simply delicioso! Definitely a gut buster and the gateway to a soothing afternoon siesta.

  • DC H.

I feel like the Super Christmas burrito is the pinnacle of burrito making. Don't even bother with the non-breakfast-burrito items on the menu. I'm pretty sure I lived off of Bacon Red burritos for most of 2005.

    (5)
  • Bill H.

A little overhyped. One egg breakfast burritos. One egg...really? It's literally just a egg, whatever breakfast meat you want, some cheese thrown in a tortilla. They don't even wrap it to make it hand held. Instead you get this overstuffed, awkward breakfast taco that falls apart when you try and eat it. Not bad... but just not that good.

    (2)
  • Radclyffe C.

The lunch special burrito was pretty limited - only meat and red sauce in a tortilla. I would expect at least some lettuce and tomato (preferably also beans and cheese) as a minimal burrito spread.

    (3)
  • Stephanie V.

This is the best breakfast burrito place EVER!!! IF you aren't from New Mexico and don't like hot chili then don't go because your review is worthless to people in New Mexico. You can go hate on other places but this one. AND the flavor is awesome too so whoever posted that the flavor sucks is absolutely wrong. I moved from New Mexico to Colorado and I crave it everyday! Love this place... and by the way... it made the london times on the one of the best places to eat so... yea.

The Chili Works was the best part about living in Los Alamos ('94-'99). My family swore by their breakfast burritos. My dad was a regular and they always had his waiting for him at 7:30am each morning. The bacon, green, no cheese (Eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, green chile) was his standby. There is nothing on their breakfast menu that isn't amazing. My favorite was the combo, green, cheese (ground beef, beans, cheddar cheese and green chile.) I highly recommend this place, don't eat anywhere else in town if you only have a couple hours there. It's the best! (President Clinton came to town plus 400 of his staff when I lived there and the Chili Works shut down because they had 400 burrito orders to fill. It's that good) WARNING: New Mexico hatch green chile is noted for being extremely hot! Don't listen to the natives who are acclimated to the pain! If you are not partial to losing part of your taste buds then I recommend passing on the chile. The food is just as good without it!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
